Authete Studio
Welcoming Authete Studio in our latest TGD Friends Q+A!
hello! welcome to the TGD friends series! can you tell us what it is you create?
Hello, so happy to be here! I mostly hand make ceramics but I dabble in a little glass and print making. I like to focus on functional everyday pieces because these have the greatest potential to influence your day (and hopefully your happiness). If you love your belongings you are more likely to look after them, repairing and maintaining them which is not only more enjoyable for us as an individual but is also better for the planet. It moves us away from throw away culture.
share with us a bit about your journey and how you got started.
My early trajectory was not a straight one which used to give me a bit of anxiety, but now that I am where I am, I can see how my scattered skills are an asset. I studied Industrial Design and began my career designing homewares before moving into furniture and now just recently I took the scary leap into working for myself full time. I saved up during Covid to get a small kiln and this was the tipping point that put my heart all in on the dream Authete.
how would you describe your creative style?
Oh this is a hard one because I feel like I am still exploring my own style, but I can certainly say I have an unwavering love for texture and neutrals. I try to add interest playing with details and form over colour or novelty because I want the pieces to feel classy over trendy.
what’s one of your favourite moments in your creative career so far?
I am stoked to be apart of the upcoming Sydney Ceramics Markets in October, it’s going to be a bit of a ‘coming out’ for Authete, our first time getting to showcase what we’ve been working on in the studio for the last few months. I can’t wait!
who are the designers/creatives inspiring you right now?
I love antiques and vintage interior pieces so I’m very inspired by amazing collectors like @theuntrainedeye , @cleo.collects , @palis_home , @tasminjohnson .
describe to us your perfect day.
Oh my perfect day would start with waking up with the sun (not to an alarm) and having a slow breaky with company in a sunny patch of the garden (but I could be plated with an airy balcony). Followed by exploring new streets getting to pop in to artisan stores and strolling through parks or galleries, having great chats at a small cafe for lunch. In the afternoon a boat ride would go down a treat before docking somewhere waterside for dinner in the open air, have a few cocktails and a dance before walking home along the beach. Yep, I wouldn’t be mad about any of that!
Thank you so much for joining us!
